We are Jews.  We came together as a response to the events of Sept.  11th, and have been calling ourselves "Jews for Global Justice."  We have participated in several of the anti-war rallies in Portland, and in the recent demonstration against Barak at the World Affairs Council. We all have experience in various "social justice" movements:anti-globalization, anti-racism, feminism, labor, environmental, socialist, human rights, Central America support, .  .  .  .  Some of us like to call ourselves "radical", others don't mind "progressive" (some of us do though).  We all consider ourselves to be part of the current anti-war movement.  We strongly doubt that our government can adequately defend America against other attacks such as the Sept. 11th one—largely because, in order to do so, it would have to admit its complicity in terrorism on every continent:Asia, Africa, Latin America, Europe, and especially in the Middle East.  As Jews, we want to make it clear that we stand against the continuing violation of the human rights of the Palestinians by the State of Israel, and in particular that we want an immediate end to the military occupation of the West Bank and Gaza, including the dismantling of the Jewish settlements in those areas.  We are against these policies of the Israeli government, and are against U.S. support of Israel while it continues in these policies.  Not all of us would flesh out the above points in the same way, but we want to continue to work together to: provide a clear Jewish voice—both within and outside of the Jewish community—in opposition to Israel's policies toward the Palestinians, and in favor of Palestinian human and national rights; win support in the Jewish community for a really effective defense against more Sept. 11ths, and in protest of the "super-patriotic" depredations the administration will continue to commit; provide a clear Jewish voice within the social justice movements for the defense of Jewish people and against anti-Semitism; and within the anti-war movement generally, to propagate our understanding of the "terrorist threat" and how to deal with it.  We are just a few people, and cannot take all this on all by ourselves.  If you are a like-minded Jew, we need you to join us in this challenging work.
